After graduating from Smith College in 1970, Susan taught sixth grade in the Boston Public Schools for three years before deciding to attend the University of Maine School of Law.  While there, she began doing estate tax audits for the IRS and, upon graduation in 1976, went to work full time as an estate tax attorney with the Internal Revenue Service in Portland.  While at the IRS, she received her CPA designation.

Susan left the IRS in 1979 to go into private law practice and has been practicing as an attorney in Portland continuously since 1979.  For almost twenty years (from 1986-2005) she was the trusts and estates partner at MittelAsen, LLC in Portland.  In 1997 she was elected a fellow of the prestigious American College of Trusts and Estates Counsel and in March 2007 became State Chair of the Maine Fellows.

Susan is a past President of the Maine Estate Planning Council, the Maine Law Alumni Association and the Maine State Bar Association.  She has been a member of the Planned Giving Committee of Maine Medical Center and has been its chair.  Susan was appointed to the Grievance Commission of the Maine Board of Overseers and served for two terms 1995-2002, the last four years as its chair.  In 2002 she was appointed by the Maine Supreme Judicial Court to the Maine Board of Bar Overseers.  In 2006-2007, she was its chair.

Susan’s son, Adam, has graduated from college and works in Washington, DC.  She loves movies, books, golf and crossword puzzles.  Her interest each March in the NCAA basketball tournament is well known.
